So I finally got my 15 hours of solo flight time in, and worked up the nerve to take the final check for obtaining my license. And guess what...

I succeeded in obtaining my license. Yes yes, it's still a license for solo flight (still 35h fly time to go), but it's a start.
Now I can start for competition training, etc. The worlds open up, again.

After 9 months, my nephew is finally born. His parents have named him Mathies.
And yes, he's just as cute as you would imagine.

Up until now, I was flying my solos with a Twin Astir II. It's a 2 seat glider which we use at our club for training (among other things).
The instructors thought it was time I moved on to something else: a Club Astir (also known as the Jeans).

The Jeans is a one seater, sort of the 1-seat equivalent of the Twin Astir I (yes, there's a difference between Twin I and II). It's a small and swift craft; not very recent, and it's a bit fickleish at times. In short: I love it!

I'll be flying this for a while, at least until I've enough hours on the thing to move up to the next glider.

After a full year of education, I finally got the clearance (well, actually, my instructors basically forced me to do it) to go solo.

The experience of flying all alone is a bit weird at first. Knowing that you don't really have anyone to back you up, gives one a funny feeling. On the other hand, after the funny feelings are gone, there's the feeling of ultimate freedom, flying around in the sky with only you.
The very first flight didn't take long (some 15 minutes or so), but for myself, they were the longest 15 minutes ever (and I mean that in a good way).

"Aaaah, the story continues..."

I was browsing through the future releases section of my favourite online shop for games and DVDs (http://www.mediadis.com/), and saw most pleasingly, the announcement of Far Cry 2. "Neat!", I thought, "Ubisoft and Crytek are gonna make a sequel of the very first Far Cry."
A quick google led me to the official site.

The happy feeling I got didn't last long though... After reading the features on the key features page, I was quickly disappointed by a lot of things.

First of, despite their Far Cry® 2, the true sequel to the award-winning PC game (lite  ...

Just moved the website again. This time it's not a physical move of the server, but to another server altogether. It should have a bit of better performance than the old one.
If you happen to find any bugs because of this move, please let me know.

Enlisted myself for a evening course of French. Since the latter is horrible, it is a very good idea, no?

Anyway, for those that are interested, can check out the website of the organizing party:

http://www.tio-cvo.be/

The website is in Dutch, but they also teach that, so it should not be a problem at all.

Finally, it's ready: my very new, special-ordered media pc. I mainly bought it to replace my (rather noisy) old pc with it, and to have a real looking PVR thingy.
Want to see pictures? Of course you do...

Half-front-side view, along with the big, silent fans.

The rear of the case, displaying HDMI, Audigy and TV tuner, among other things.

The internals of the case, displaying the various system components, like in any other system, really.

The line up: from bottoms up, the media pc, the radio tuner and amp, the cd player, and my MP3 player's at the top.

The system will be running G  ...

Time for a new experience, and a new hobby in my life.
Thanks to Bart (aka: my boss), who took me and a collegue of mine for a figurative spin around the block: in the form of gliding...

Next thing I know, I was signing myself up at Albatros Zweefvliegclub (note: website in dutch) at Hasselt (Kiewit), and already have had two lessons.

Those that care may keep their fingers crossed each time I'm in the air (usually on saturdays), and pray that I don't drill the glider down into the ground... ;-)

The move is as good as completed. I still have to clean up several stuff and such, and there are still some things that have to be moved out (like my father's encyclopedia).

The moving chapter is pretty much finished, well, accept the clean up of course. I'll post a picture as soon as I get there.

Because of my move, I had need of a media PC system, which allowed me to watch TV, record from TV, watch DVDs, listen to music and more. Buying a pc with Windows Media Center was not an option: linux has very wonderful applications and utilities to build such a sytem. For hardware, I had an old pc which I used as a server, but because of the wonderful capabilities of VMware, I decided to convert the machine to a so-called Media PC.

To contribute my efforts to the community, I decided to create some sort of a guide. It is not a real how-to, but rather the steps I took to get things running, al  ...

Some more intermediate shots of my own move...

More photos will be found in the gallery (if it ever gets finished, that is).

My brother Kurt moved out this weekend. His house is finally finished, or at least, just up to the point it is liveable.
Since we shared a room, you can believe I'm happy to finally have the Kingdom for myself. The reconstruction (so to speak) has already begun...

Attached are the very first photo's, in the very early stage of the reconstruction.
This part pretty much shows my soon-to-be-my bed. Most of the old cupboards and closets have already been thrown out; you can see the markings on the walls and such.

Well, isn't this great... Thought I had a quiet weekend (well, relatively quiet, read the next post), with a bit of gaming and such. But apparently, my oh-so-wonderful water-cooled video card thought otherwise.

Twas Friday afternoon: I booted up my pc. Although it was a bit more silent than usually, I discarded it as being the bit cold weather of these days.
Thought it would be neat to do a bit of retro-gaming, and fired up the old Half-Life 1...

About two minutes in the game, alarms and whistles and popups went off, and as the message your card is too hot appeared on the screen, I distincti  ...

Server will be down again this weekend on account of a new kernel and the addition of extra RAM.

by lunarg on March 17th 2007, at 09:39

It will be but a few days before I have both my eyes lasered. Glasses, fare thee well...

The actual operation will be on Thu March 22nd (that's only a few days away), with a checkup the day after (Fri that is). As a result, I still have the weekend to adjust to the new situation; after the weekend, I'm thrown back into the life of work and more work.

The procedure itself is called Lasik (short for LAser In SItu Keratomileusis). More information can be found on the internet or on this site (in Dutch though): http://www.olc.be/.

Because of relocation of my webhosting to another server housing, this site (and others on that particular server) will be unavailable.

The relocation is planned on Thu 15th February around 4am. Expected downtime should be about 2 hours (depending on traffic ;-) ).
